Queen Conch: Lobatus Gigas

Queen Conch: Lobatus Gigas
Queen Conch are an important part of culture in the Bahamas. However, because of their extended juvenile phase, conch do not reach sexual maturity for several years and cannot reproduce until they reach their adult phase. Conch populations can be protected by educating fishermen to recognize when to keep or toss their catches. By measuring the width of the shell lip, fishermen can determine whether or not a conch is sexually mature.
